When we think about physical activity, we often picture someone running at dawn, a person lifting weights or a group taking a fitness class. And if we do not fit that picture, it is easy to conclude that we ‘do not exercise’. That is a big mistake! Movement is not only structured training, but also all those small gestures we make during the day – from stretching after getting out of bed, through a walk to the bakery for fresh bread, to playing with a child or a dog. Our bodies are made to move, and small everyday activities can do more for our health and well-being than we realise. And that is exactly what we are going to talk about today – with no pressure, no stopwatch and no comparing ourselves to others.

Small movements, a big difference

Daily movement works like a natural shot of energy. A few minutes’ walk is enough to feel your body warming up and your mind becoming more alert. It is not about breaking into a sweat at the gym or running up ten flights of stairs without stopping. Sometimes it is as simple as stepping outside for fresh air, stretching your arms or having a quick play with your child. It is these small portions of movement, repeated regularly, that can bring a sense of lightness and lift your mood even on the busiest of days.

Movement as part of your daily rhythm

It is also worth remembering that the body likes to be surprised. If you usually spend the day at a desk, take a few steps around the room during a phone call. If you normally take the lift, try choosing the stairs at least once a day. These decisions seem minor, but over the course of a week they add up to an enormous difference. Instead of seeing movement as another task to tick off, you can treat it as a natural part of everyday life — as obvious as drinking water or brushing your teeth.

Time for yourself, in motion

Movement is not only about caring for your body, but for your mind too. A moment’s walk can be your way of gaining perspective, stepping away from your responsibilities and quieting your thoughts. You can treat it as a mini-ritual in which you put your phone away, focus on your breathing and let your thoughts flow freely. Such a daily break, however short, can give you a sense of lightness and of having more control over your time. And the more often you reach for it, the more it becomes a natural and necessary part of your day.
